Orbis Ecology have an opportunity for a Seasonal Bat Ecologist to join our team on 6-month fixed-term contract to start 1st April 2022 until the 1st October 2022.

The position is home based, preferably North Devon based but all areas will be considered. Salary £20,000 Pro Rata. 

The Role

The role will involve managing a range of bat related projects, to include leading and assisting on PRA surveys, emergence/re-entry/transect surveys, data analysis (sonogram analysis and reviewing footage from IR cameras) and contributing to reports. The fieldwork could take place across a variety of urban and rural settings primarily across Devon but may occasionally include sites further afield.

Essential Skills

  • Protected Species Survey Licence: Bat Class 1, (Class 2 desirable)
  • Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline
  • Minimum Qualifying CIEEM member or in process of applying 
  • An excellent understanding of current relevant UK wildlife legislation
  • Experience with leading and assisting emergence, re-entry and transect surveys 
  • Confident working with technology, eg: using tablets for observational recording, infrared cameras, static & handheld bat detectors and analysing relevant data
  • Competent at working with bat call analysis software eg Anabat Insight (training can be provided)
  • Good communication skills – ability to liaise with clients both in person and via phone/email as necessary
  • Experience of report writing to a high standard with attention to detail 
  • Well organised, self-motivated and able to work independently, or as part of the wider Orbis Ecology team.

Essential Practical Requirements

  • Home workspace with excellent broadband 
  • Full, clean UK driving licence & access to car insured for business use
  • Devon based (ideally North Devon but will consider all areas)
  • Ability to carry out fieldwork including during unsociable hours (where possible we try to conduct no more than 3 dusk surveys per week) 

Desirable

  • Current CSCS certification/ROLO health and safety training
  • Experience of a wider range of ecological surveys 
  • Experience of Preliminary Ecological Appraisals
