Hedgerow Surveys

Devon is famous for its many miles of  ancient hedgerows. They give the countryside here its distinct character and provide hundreds of miles of valuable habitat for a diverse range of wildlife.

As many hedgerows are ancient and classified as ‘important’ they are given protection against destruction and damage.  A survey should be carried out by an ecologist if a section of hedgerow needs to be removed. Orbis Ecology follows current guidance from the Hedgerow Survey Handbook (Defra 2007) to determine whether hedgerows meet the criteria of ‘important hedgerows’ as defined within the Hedgerow Regulations (1997).

We will offer advice and guidance on how to approach any hedgerow removal to reduce impacts on the hedgerow itself and the wildlife that uses it.
